Planning a Home Remodel? – Great advice for beginning home remodelers.

I came across this beginning home remodeling article and thought I would share it.

Now this is not something from the ‘main-stream’ DIY community

but from a family who put off their remodeling until . . . . . .

Here is an excerpt from a post at  Cupcakes and Yoga Pants

Followed by the thoughts that come to mind for me.

Here goes.

“For the past few months, the hubby and I have been living in a construction zone thanks to a water leak and broken heating system. We’re undergoing multiple unplanned repairs and renovations to our basement, kitchen, laundry room, two bathrooms and rear foyer. Whew! Since we’ve never done a massive, long-term project like this before, it’s been quite the learning experience.”

You can avoid this type of scene in you own home. Or at least make it manageable.

The post continues with some good advice on things to think about when considering a home remodel.  There truly are some good ideas to consider in the post.

Here are my thoughts to consider that this post brings to light.

  • How well do you know your home? Every homeowner should have a complete understanding of the repair and maintenance issues of their homes.  That way you're far less likely to find yourself  "undergoing multiple unplanned repairs and renovations".
  • Fix what's broken first. Left unchecked Repair and Maintenance issues can cause serious "quality of living"problems for your family. Mold, mildew, water leaks, drafts, broken windows and latches, and non-functioning appliances all have unforeseen consequences.  None Good.
  • A well maintained home commands a greater  resale value.   Unless you're willing to sell your home as a fixer-upper.
  • With Maintenance complete, and an annual plan in place,  you can start a plan to remodel your home.  Complete with estimated budget, time schedule, and completion date.
  • All remodeling plans should include a strong understanding of your surrounding neighborhood. Think re-sale comps here.  You don't want to over-build for your neighborhood.
  • It's never too soon to start selling your home. Make sure your home looks as good as possible on the outside. The internet is now the starting point for most home sales. Image is everything, especially in the home buyer's eyes.
